Spectacular Television.
I don’t normally get attached to television shows, I have been burned far too often in the past, and I still miss Kitchen Confidential. Tears aside, I mostly stick to the classics, M*A*S*H, Frasier and an assortment of ’new-classics’ in Scrubs, House, How I Met Your Mother, and the like.
Recently though, after having bought and watched Band of Brothers, I discovered Generation Kill, a mini-series that tells the story of a battalion of marines during the first 40 days of the Iraq war.
The story, which is capped with the marines heading home, having served their tour, follows the First Recon Battalion through their own personal struggles with supply shortages, the war and blurred objectives.
Generation Kill, like Band of Brothers, features the staples of a moving war story, decisive camera cuts, solid acting and uncompromising character development that, most importantly, matters and affects the story. This development, which culminates in the final episode with the unit coming to terms with their duty, will – I am sure – forever remain a favourite moment of television history for me.
The seven-part series concluded yesterday night, so I can’t say for certain if and when it will be back on. For now, though, treat yourself to some teasers.
